By now you have all probably heard enough about defensive and Jerome Davis, but I can’t help but right about his success with the team this year anyway. David has been busting his behind all off-season to make the 49ers squad. When his name appeared on the locker next to Bryant Young’s after a defensive meeting on Sunday afternoon, Davis realized he had finally reached his goal.

"I just sat there for a moment and stared at the nameplate," he says. "Now that I've got a locker, the traveling, the trip to Europe, all the strikeouts, it was worth it."

Davis is set to earn the NFL minimum salary of $225,000 this season but is hardly assured that his roster spot won’t be taken from him at some point this season. Despite having a very impressive off-season, and the ability to actually get pressure on the quarterback from the defensive end position, Davis’ spot is by no means guaranteed.

As the team continues to juggle its roster, particularly when it brings rookie defensive tackle Josh Shaw onto the active roster, Davis may be in some trouble. As it stands now though, the team is more likely to release a depth linebacker or newly acquired defensive tackle Garrett Johnson than Davis.

Davis can breathe a sigh of relief for the moment, but he won’t be able to cherish his spot for long. He will have to prove continually that he belongs at the NFL level. I for one really like Davis at end. I feel he is a very talented player, and hope that he manages to stick with the club.
