When the 49ers face the Broncos this Sunday, 49ers sophomore running back Kevan Barlow will face Bronco’s Head Coach Mike Shanahan for the first time in a regular season game, when he is fully healthy. What’s the big deal? Well after Barlow was selected by the 49ers in the third round of the draft, Shanahan called the 49ers organization for choosing the best running back in the draft.

Since joining the 49ers, the running back has certainly grabbed the attention of fans and coaches. Barlow has proven to be a quick and powerful runner, and the ideal change of pace to Garrison Hearst. This off-season he spent much of his time toning his body, adding muscle and losing weight.

The new and improved Barlow is fully healthy, after playing all of last season with a nagging leg injury, and he is being recognized as a key player on the 49ers offense. Barlow is receiving about one carry, for every two that Hearst - the team’s starting running back receives.

The 49ers came out forcing the ball to receiver Terrell Owens in the first week. The result was less than an impressive offense. It’s likely that when they face the Broncos on Sunday, the team will turn to all of its weapons, and that could mean a very big day for Kevan Barlow.
