Team CEO Jed York, unlike in his combative news conference a year ago, acknowledges the growing fan revolt and vows to get the 49ers back to the Super Bowl.
…
Extra Point:
A stark contrast from the approach Jed and Trent took to the dismissal of Jim Harbaugh last season, York stood in front of the media today to announce the firing of Jim Tomsula - long time coach and 49ers family member. Unlike last season, York stood alone in front of the media - though much like last season, it was clear before the final game that the head coach would be gone.
York too an apologetic and humble tone to his press conference, rather than the arrogant, ego-filled, approach like last season. Also, unlike last season York offered a clear explanation as to why the team fired Tomsula. Specifically, York offered that the team did not collectively improve from the beginning of the season to the end. In addition, York suggested the team took a chance in someone they believed in - and that it didn't pan out.
Of interest, York quoted the great Vince Lombardi for inspiration. Despite alluding to his uncle Eddie as his mentor, York was purposeful in passing over the Genius Bill Walsh to quote Lombardi. This is a signal that the team is not suck in the Bill Walsh tree of coaching, but an odd choice given his several allusions to his uncle. It was as if he was trying to both distance himself and attach himself to the Glory Years.
Along with the dismissal of Jim Tomsula, York stood strongly behind his General Manager, Trent Baalke. He gave Trent his full confidence based on past ability to build a championship caliber team. He did however suggest that whoever the Head Coach would be, they would have to have the ability to work together with Baalke to build the roster. Among other attributes, Jed suggested that he wanted someone with "leadership" and "strategic vision" in speaking about vision he spoke about who the 49ers have been and will be.
