The 49ers announced that they have hired Chip Kelly as Head Coach. They have yet to hold a press conference on the new Head Coach… …
At the Press Conference the team will no doubt try and convince the world that Kelly and Baalke can together turn this team around. Consider me unconvinced. There is nothing Jed, Trent, or Kelly can say at this point to make me think otherwise. Given the choice of mediocre coaching talent this offseason (the talented coaches were either under contract, or significantly 'old' by NFL standards) the team chose (or perhaps defaulted to) one of the least likely to right the sinking ship we've come to know the 49ers to be.The team was apparently narrowing its focus between Mike Shanahan and Kelly. That Shanahan lost that race is mind blowing. Kelly will struggle to put together an adequate coaching staff, perhaps struggle a little less than Tomsula, but struggle he will. Shanahan at least would have assembled a respectable staff, and could have groomed a replacement in the process.
Given how bad this team was last year, and given how awful the front office has performed, and given that the very fabric that built the dynasty that was the 49ers is tearing apart at the seems - this hiring offers nothing to indicate the team is prepared to put ego aside, and start winning again.
Perhaps the only plus side to this move, is that if Baalke and Kelly fail this season, they will both be gone at the end of the season. Can we fast forward? I was more excited by Nolan, Erickson, and Singletary.
