WASHINGTON (March 23, 2007) -- A Pentagon investigation will recommend that nine officers, including up to four generals, be held accountable for missteps in the aftermath of the friendly fire death of Army Ranger Pat Tillman in Afghanistan, senior defense officials said. The Defense Department inspector general will cite a range of missteps and inappropriate conduct as the military probed the former football star's death on the battlefront in 2004, said one defense official. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/10083354

I watched a special on ESPN's outside the lines on this & no doubt this was very avoidable. He gave up his life protecting one of his own. Very sad.

He was a true American hero(like all those that serve and protect us),no matter what the circumstances of his death are and no matter what anyone above him in rank did to keep the facts secret after he was killed.

Very True my man I can relate. I was 4 months old when my father ( a door gunner in the 101st Airborn) was shot down and killed in 68. I also served in the U.S. Navy........

D-roc,
Sorry to hear about your Dad. He had a very difficult assignment. I, like you, spent my time in the Navy. I followed Tillman's story from day one. How could you not respect the man when he gave up so much! Kind of puts all of this sports mania in perspective. Football warriors are one thing, true heroes another entirely. It's just really tough on Tillman's family to have to confront all this deceit. That's what I was thinking about: how your father's death must have affected you, and how Tillman's death has affected his family. Then, how this entire story has affected us all.

Not sure it will be interresting too see how this all turns out. The one thing I do know as a vet & an ex-cop his death was avoidable.... Lack of communication............... The cover up makes a sad situation so much worse....... My dad died in Nam in 68 & while I was only 4 months old I know from the stories that it's all about P. Tillman's family right now. Having my own little boy Andre' as you know he's 6, I can't begin to understand how they feel or what they are going through....

As an ARMY combat vet this story makes me sick. I have a buddy who was killed in Iraq in 4/03 and there are too many versions of what happend to ever know the truth. Every loss is one too many and not everyone that dies, dies like a "Hero" that word is being used far too much now days. What Pat did was was as selfless as it gets in this life. From a fellow soldier RIP brother AIRBORNE!!!!!

detached909 I am a very proud Navy vet. Never saw any action, nothing going on when I was in during the late 80's except a few "conflicts"...... My father died in action in 68 he was a door gunner with the 101st. He will be gone 39 years this Oct.... Much love too all our vets all the time.... Pat T. gave it all up to go over there. Utmost respect. Amazing person. wow...........

Actually I think that everyone that volunteers to go into the service is a hero and anyone in the service that dies serving this Country IS a big time HERO ! I don't think the word is used enough and every time I see a person in the service I go up and shake their hand and thank them for being a hero. jmho .

You can debate the politics back and forth but the men and women who decide to put their life at risk in the uniform truly deserves that distinction!

This just makes you wonder about a lack of leadership. It seems like such a no brainy to tell the truth. Tillman, his family and America deserved it.

Unfortunately it is human nature to try to cover your own butt in circumstances like this and in the military they are just naturally more secretive than most, they have alway been.

It is so wrong to the brave men in harms way. And military leadership dishonoring them. Yes I have had two brothers( 1 jarhead, 1 flyboy) go to Iraq and come back unharmed. Their duty to our country is great.

As much as I respect what Tillman sacraficed to go over there and risk his life & then ultimately lose it, while the cover up is disturbing, we all know that had he been a reg. soldier KIA it would have been a mere blip on CNN. We see it almost everyday. Glad both your brothers came home safely Woodrow very .

The officers in charge should be punished.
