No way the 49ers get mixed up in this drama.  He is either going to play for the Packers or Vikes imho.

I think its more like the Niners are starting to realize they dont have a TED linebacker.

Oak: That realization won't change with the signing of Spikes, since he has never played TED before. Ulbrich had no real mistakes in the game, but Grant didn't show me much in terms of quickness or reaction. I think Spikes is a good move b/c of his experience.

With Moore struggling in camp and clearly not being a favorite of Nolan's, it's easy to see why Moore is a goner and Spikes is suddenly in at TED. We'll see what happens.

Yep. Now it's official, Spike's a Niner.

PPW reports that shortly after this statement was made public Spikes was suspended for the season under suspection that he has violated the leagues substance abuse policy. He was later seen leaving the Santa Clara facility with first ballot Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. .. Shocked

The Brooks Signing: Sometimes the 49ers baffle me. They sign habitually-troubled but richly-talented Ahmad Brooks to back up Patrick Willis. So lets say that Brooks gets it while under the tutelage of the inspirational and tough Mike Singletary. All it means is Brooks will be a Pro Bowl backup. Having him back up Willis makes no sense. Brooks is a make or break type of player. Either his talent is going to shoot him to the moon, or he might get in trouble, or he'll let himself get out of shape.

Not so much. What if they take the slower approach of letting him learn the system, not forcing him to make plays, not forcing him to be the hero. Since he made that one youtube-worthy tackle, I'll bet peopl have been breathing down his neck to be excellent, or at least lead the D. Maybe he's not ready for that on an NFL level, and he needs time, patience, and a place to grow. He's a young guy who did stupid things, but no one is doomed to be what they were when they didn't know better. Let him backup Willis, watch talent+humility see how it translates into success, then put him next to willis. Willis is the type of guy who will teach anyone who is behind him. They'll talk, become friends, and when Brooks gets a chance, we can hope Willis will have rubbed off. No one thinks Willis is going to lose his job, so it wouldn't make sense for them to sign him to back him up for the long term. That they signed him for two years, meaning, sit and watch, we'll use you occasionally when we need the talent (but don't need more than football knowledge) and you still get one year to prove yourself as a starter.  Spikes only signed a one year deal, and Ulbrich isn't the future at TED. This was a way of guaranteeing that you don't have to look for this position in the draft next year.

It was a genius move, and cheap.

Since apparently, in the Nolan regime,  we don't have a problem taking a chance on guys with questionable backgrounds, i.e. Antonio Bryant, Ahmad Brooks.  Hows about we take a look Ed Johnson, DT, IND, if they do indeed end up releasing him after his latest arrest.  6'2", 296lbs started all 16 games last year, finishing with 63 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. And apparently, was being looked at for a bigger role this year.  NT, though a bit undersized for the 3-4.  Maybe a good fit at end.  Speaking of which, 296 is undersized?  Yikes.  Too bad you can't order them super sized from McDonalds.

I doubt it happens.   Is he ready to step in and play in our scheme and if he is who would they release to make the room.  Despite not being dominant at least ours have played together, I think our defense is pretty set.

From Matt B. today...

Spencer goes to IR; Niners snag O-lineman
Shawntae Spencer, who tore a knee ligament in Week two, finally was placed on injured reserve today. The roster opening allowed the 49ers to pounce on a player they liked, offensive lineman Kirk Barton, who was released by the Miami Dolphins yesterday. Barton will be on the 53-man roster and will join the 49ers Friday in New Jersey. Barton played at Ohio State and was a seventh-round draft pick by the Bears this year before being waived and picked up by the Dolphins. The 6-4, 305-pound Barton - surprise, surprise - was at the Senior Bowl.

* I just read that he plays Right Tackle *   ( ! )

So here's some suggestions on how the 49ers can recapture their own once successful history.

SIGN JEFF GARCIA: He's the last quarterback Walsh claimed, and a player who knows his system intimately. Garcia started his improbable career as a San Jose State Spartan and as a 49er in the NFL, now he could end it here. Not only does Garcia connect the team to its glorious past as the last quarterback to lead the 49ers to the playoffs, he's well-suited to a West Coast offense. And that's exactly the offense the team needs to run. Over the last 24 games, the 49ers have been the worst pass-protecting team in the league. They also have big receivers who are short on speed, but capable of muscling their way through short zone coverages.

With this type of personnel, they need a quick-trigger short passing game run by an experienced player to have any chance offensively.

Also, Garcia might be the most adept quarterback in the league at evading sacks and he plays with a competitive thirst this team needs to emulate.

I have to say I sure would not be against us bringing Jeff back here to end his carreer as long as we are running the WCO.

Jump passes aside..... The rookie could not ask for a  better mentor to learn from.  Garcia has always been an extremely hard worker, remarkably durable considering how reckless he is knows the system inside and out, and has proven once again this year that he still has some game left in him.
