Maybe they are waiting to see if Chilo can play RT?  What else explains why we aren't addressing that area?  Impatience on our part maybe?  A lack of prospects?

Everyone knows JJ won't play a full season so at least one backup will see time.  I can't believe they feel the best option is to stick our head in the sand and make Snyder slide over again.  Granted, we have two (hopefully) capable backup guards in Wragge & Rachal, but is it really the best idea to ask Snyder to play two spots again?

wcg: i still can't believe we haven't signed an OT yet.  Ross, Gandy...someone.  They all have starting experience.  Sure they aren't very good, but can they be any worse than Mitchell?  We need at least 1 more OT.

No question, and it's all the more puzzling when Nolan has all but admitted Duckett is not ready for the backup job he may be given.  We've got money and a need so let's get it done.

KS,

They need to decide what Snyder is going to be and let him do it.  He's either the super sub who can play anywhere, or he's given one spot to learn and hopefully excel at.  He's been ok when starting, but I can't help but think he'd be so much better if given the LG or RT spot to concentrate on solely.

Given the Broncos' recent signing of Michael Pittman the release of Henry is not a big surprise but considering how hot he started out last season the Broncos has to be seriously disappointed how it turned out....

Although players such as Bruce, Johnson and RB DeShaun Foster must certainly be considered serviceable, it seems like the Niners did surprisingly little, especially via the draft, to upgrade their listless offense. The OT position appears especially thin, particularly on the right side, where the team’s reliance on injury-prone Jonas Jennings could be a very risky proposition.

Odell Thurman suspended indefinitely

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=ApKOJygow1zhPB1q6DDY9fZDubYF?slug=ap-thurmansuspended&prov=ap&type=lgns

I'm fairly certain I read somewhere that we had no interest in signing him in the first place (character issues), but at least now we can officially cross this guy off the list of potential ted's.

Simms To Visit

The 49ers might have a new offensive tackle by Monday. That's when former Raider Barry Simms is expected to visit. The team is in sore need of tackle depth after failing to address the issue in the draft, free agency, or with rookie free agents.

http://www.49ersparadise.com/cgi-bin/news/news.cgi?action=display&num=17464

I really hope we get something done with Sims today!

KS I think I read the same thing last week BEFORE he (O. Thurman) was suspended, talk about wasting his talent....

D - I hate it when players like Thurman throw away a career that I would kill for.  I have no sympathy for any of them.

In other news...

We released OT Quasim (sp?) Mitchell & Sims prob won't decide until next week.

We might have one clear advantage over the rest being based close to his former team?!  Undecided   I don't know about his family but it is a long jump to relocate to another coast if you leave your family behind.

You would think that would be a huge factor but he is traveling for 8 months regardless (especially with us as we are winning the bowl Wink ), and I don't think that it will come down to the bread as while both teams (Pats & us) are responsible, we are NOT cheap just ask BRUCE who we gave 6 Mil. for 2 year contract.....  I really want us to land this cat Grid. it would really help us and he might push JJ for the starting position.

LeCharles Bentley was released by the Browns.

He hasn't been healthy in 2 years.  First he tears a knee, then he gets a staph infection (which the Browns had a rash of).

When healthy, he's a very good center.  I think the Niners should be all over this guy. A 1 year prove-it deal, even if it "looks" like a longer deal would be fine. With heitmann's deal coming up soon, we can't pass up taking a look at this guy.

I agree. I wanted this guy when he was a FA 2 years ago. He's still young and I think he can come back from his injury.

I would love to see us go after him as well and offer him the type of deal J mentioned.  Perhaps he could slide over to guard if he did not land the starting job at center?

Day after returning to practice, Bentley released

I have a feeling there will be several teams bidding for his services so I doubt we get him.  I'm not sure he would help our situation at tackle, unless Heitmann moves back to guard and Snyder once again becomes the primary backup tackle.

We need OL help pretty desperately at this point, so I would like to see it happen - I just don't think it will.

Heitman was bullied last year. He was killing the pocket at times and in the publication that ranks the 49ers 31st in the league he was chosen as the weakest link.

Lecharles Bentley has already proven it, but sidetracked by injuries.

If we do not make a BIG push for him I will be severely dissapointed given how big the reward could be. It's worth a flyer, no question.

It's funny how on this forum many have no problem finding the good and ignoring the bad in players of other teams...  I think it's just probably what fans do.

If Heitmann were released it would be, "He killed in 2006-2007...  he anchored the line in Frank Gores PBowl season... then he got hurt, and was slow to come back from it in 2007-2008, but by the end of the season found his rhythm again."

Not taking away from this guy, I'm just sayin.   Also, I know we need oline depth like TO now needs to have a drug test (HAHA Stupid TO!)

Sims has now visited the 49ers, New England, Baltimore and St. Louis. Agent Ken Vierra said Friday no front-runner exists. Neither do any starting guarantees, but Vierra said that was not the key — an opportunity to compete is.

Nolan insists everybody has that chance in his world — J.T. O'Sullivan being walking proof. But with Sims, the question is where to compete? Nolan says the 49ers see him at tackle, not guard, where he has played and where the 49ers wait to see if reclusive Larry Allen is still alive.

He looked pretty solid when he was on the feild,
anyone feel the same?

Welcome Lawson!  - I liked Bing coming out of college, and was excited when he joined the 49ers - But the truth is he was still raw  (coming off injury) and with M.Lewis & K. Lewis already at SS, Bing would have had time getting playing time...But I do think we let him get away too easy - don't remember if he was claimed off the practice squad or released   - If only he could play RT!

lawson: I do not.  Bing never showed much to me.  He went from the Raiders cut list, to the Niners PS, and is now on the Jets' TC roster.  He's barely hanging on to a bottom-of-the-roster NFL job. Could we have given up on him too soon?  Sure.  But 3 or 4 teams can't all be wrong about him.

Jimmy Williams was just released. I know the reports said he was over weight but i think the kid is a stud. Niners prob wont get him since were pretty stocked at the CB/S position but i would be thrilled if he did.

ty: yea, Jimmy Williams.  Coming out of college, he was a guy that was too slow to play anything other than Cover 2 CB.  He was headed to safety in the NFL.  Like you said, we're probably too stocked at safety and CB to even bring him in.

But man i hope we land Sims,
and what would we do with an overweight Jimmy Williams?
Maybe he can play ted linebacker

From Matt M.

UPDATE: The Super Bowl champs wanted him, but the 49ers got LaJuan Ramsey, a defensive tackle whom the Eagles released June 12. The Giants put in a waiver claim for Ramsey, but he was awarded to the 49ers based on their worse record from last season. Ramsey (6-3, 300) was a sixth-round pick of the Eagles in 2006 out of USC. He played nine games for the Eagles and was inactive seven times last season. Ramsey was credited with nine tackles and one QB hurry

-Matt said he will play DE in the 3-4 . Isn't it getting a bit crowded at the DE spot ?
