By modest you mean vet minimum, right?
Most definitely, and Pyro I think the idea would be to use Trotter as a two down player.

He did have a really good year in Philly in '06 didn't he. I always liked the guy. A very passionate and agressive player. If he can still move around I wouldn't mind bringing him onboard for a year.
I'm more worried about our O-line I must admit. I think we're fine at LB already but the O-line+ Now that's a question mark if there ever was one....

It is a more pressing need, I think we will pick up an OL that is cut late next summer.

Matt B says we decided to pass on Trotter.
What (if anything) does it say about McNolan's confidence in the guys we currently have on the roster at TED?

Capitol: You got it. It's a questionable spot. It would have been so with D.Smith, too.
Trotter was worth a look, but his health and speed are shot.
The Niners had their eye on ILB Lofton in rd 2, but Atlanta took him a few spots ahead of us. According to Mayock we were interested in Lofton in rd 1, but Balmer was rated significantly higher on our board.

Ulbrich made some contributions three years ago. Does he have anything left? He is faster than D Smith ~ or at least he was a some point. Neither were super strong at the point of attack against OGs and looked a bit stiff in pass coverage.

Bengals waived LB Odell Thurman. Profootballtalk.com reports the move was made because Thurman didn't report for voluntary workouts. Thurman, who was reinstated from suspension in April, didn't show for OTAs after the death of his grandmother. If the reasoning for his release is correct, the Bengals are violating NFL rules because the workouts aren't mandatory. It remains to be seen if the weak Players' Union will take action. The Bengals are also left without a true middle linebacker. Thurman has his demons, but figures to be claimed because of his talent. He's also inexpensive. http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/clubhouse.asp?sport=Nfl&majteam=CIN

ooohhhh that's a tough one. Thurman is almost ideal for the Ted spot, but he's got a rap sheet a mile long. He won't cost much and if he acts up he can be released with no hit to the cap, so it might be worth a look. As it stands, it appears he was released due to missing "voluntary" workouts to attend a funeral for his grandmother, so he might even have a grievance against the Bengals for releasing him.

He would be a great addition as long as he stays out of trouble. He seems to be on the right path now. I say he would be worth the gamble as it appears Spikes isn't going to be a niner.

We will have to see how that plays out if he does file a grievance. We might have a leg up with his former teammate now a 49er!

Interested to see what happens with Thurman.... I think we will pick up an OL that is cut late next summer. Yeah, I could see us keeping an eagle eye out for the likes of former 49er Patrick Estes not making the Bills 53 man squad and coming back here. And if there's no more injuries, I reckon it'll be an OT as we're not too thin at the interior anymore.

I would love to see him back with us, I think that McNolan would be all over him if he were in fact available. Flash will we get a crack at him 7th on the "waiver" list? If we get a shot I expect McNolan to make a move. Thurman's career prospects uncertain after release The 24-year-old Thurman will likely clear waivers and become a free agent, but the market for him is unlikely to be robust. http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL/AFC/AFC+North/Cincinnati/Features/2008/wilkening051908.htm

The top of our free agent list's should be OT, then TED LB...other then that we dont really need one, as much as I dont want to say this, we are pretty set at every other positions.

The Vikings on Friday waived Erasmus James, the former first-round draft pick who had a series of knee injuries during his time with Minnesota. The defensive end was one of the top-rated pass rushers in 2005 when Minnesota chose him out of Wisconsin with the 18th overall pick. But after notching four sacks in 15 games during his rookie season, James tore the ACL in his left knee in Week 2 of the 2006 season. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3410022If he could pass a physical would you bring him in and give him a look, many in here really liked this kid in that draft.

The 49ers have inquired about some possible veteran free-agent pickups. They asked about Shane Olivea recently, but were told that Olivea has already agreed to terms with another club. Olivea, who lost his starting job and fell out of favor with the Chargers, is expected to sign with that team in June. http://www.49ersparadise.com/cgi-bin/news/news.cgi?action=display&num=17325So much for Olivea.

KS: isn't it interesting that Olivea has supposedly "agreed to terms with another club" but he's not in any club's workout program, OTAs or minicamps (so far)? If he waits until mid June (mini's are over) to finally sign with a team, it only backs up his "lazy" rep.

Good point - I hadn't thought about it like that. I'm so used to the June cuts meaning something that I guess I automatically thought they were waiting for salary cap reasons, but (if you listen to Matt M) those cuts really don't mean much anymore. You are right, J - I think it could be laziness.
I'd still feel more comfortable if our backup OT's weren't Duckett & Mitchell.

The other thing that wasn't mentioned in that article about the June first cuts is that under a new rule teams can designate players as "June 1st cuts" @ the beginning of free ageny to give veterans a chance to catch on with teams early on. The teams are still treated like they were released after June first in terms of the salary cap. There's a chance we already looked @ or even signed some "June 1st cuts". Isaac Bruce maybe?

KS: I agree. We need an experienced backup at OT. We only have 1--Snyder. I'd like to have another one. Hell, i'd take Estes at this point or Oliver Ross or Wayne Gandy. All have been starters at OT, albeit bad ones.

I would not be surprised at all to see us go after Estes if he is avail. late next summer. He's a guy that I always felt had some potential & I was sorry we let him get away.

NFLN is reporting that the Vikings rescinded the waiver and then traded him to the Redskins for a conditional 7th rounder. There must be a reason the Skins gave up a 7th to get a guy they could have just signed as a FA, but I don't know what that reason would be (some advantage in his rookie contract perhaps).

KS: probably competition for his services. They only have to pay the salaries on his rookie deal, which will be very reasonable, and they can cut him at any time. Trading for James ensured they got him.
He was a pure pass rusher in college--i remember 2 games in his last NCAA season where he was unstoppable. He had some injury issues that knocked his stock down. He's never been healthy in the NFL--looks like those injury concerns were valid.
STill no word on who Olivea signed with. Since practically every team passed on him in FA (only 1 visit that I can find report of), it says something about him.

I'll be really concerned if we go into the season with the Oline depth chart we have right now. I hope they sign a veteran as insurance at some point before TC.

wcg: i still can't believe we haven't signed an OT yet. Ross, Gandy...someone. They all have starting experience. Sure they aren't very good, but can they be any worse than Mitchell? We need at least 1 more OT.
