I can't believe what the Vikings gave up for Allen.
That's just flat out ridiculous.

Just a 1st and 2 thirds. It's not a big deal IMO. Checking the value chart all those picks would have only amounted to the Ninth pick in the first round.

I can't believe the Cheifs gave up a proven pass rusher for three unknowns. That is just silly. He is 26! He should have 5-7 GOOD years left. silly. Oh well..this trade jacks up my entire mock. I have to redo now.

Dr Nick: I agree. I think the Vikings are taking a huge risk. A #1, 2 #3s and 30mill guaranteed to a guy that is one drink away from a 1 year suspension? Wow.
I wouldn't give up any more than the Vikings did. Then again, I would for someone like Peppers.

Great player but the Vikes gave up too much, I wonder how that trade will effect the draft?

The cost was high, but the Vikings just added the league leader in sacks to their Dline. The guy hasn't even hit his prime yet and they got him for picks that may or may not work out. I will always side with the team that gets the star over the unknown. As of now, big time win for the Vikings. Allen has had some issues with DUI's, but there's likely a provision in the contract that address that.

wcg: contract language can't protect the team when Allen is suspended for a year. What do the vikings get back? Bonus/salary? I don't see that as being much consolation or protection.

A lot of the salary part of the contract may be incentive laden, and if he is suspended for a year, he won't get those incentives and, therefore, he won't get the salary. The bonus will probably still have to go to him.

No you're right it can't protect them from a suspension, but monetarily I would bet they have covered themselves. There''s a slight risk to this deal for the Vikings, but really for what Allen brings to the table, it's worth it. They have essentially swapped their first pick #17 in which they were most likely going to take a Dlineman anyway, for a probowl DL stud who led the league in sacks. The extra comp they gave up is two 3rd round picks, which may or may not pan out. For the potential return you get on this investment, it's worth the picks imo.

Checking the value chart all those picks would have only amounted to the Ninth pick in the first round. Excellent point reddoggg about the value chart. The best player available at #9 would be...Brendan Albert? Cromartie? The best defensive lineman available at #9 would be Derrick Harvey (who doesn't fit the Vikings defense) or Phillip Merling. Hmmm...Jared Allen or Merling? As for the "one strike" risk...all of these guys couldhave their careers ruined drunk driving, and I'm not just talking about a one year suspension. If its a real concern and the Vikings want to protect their $30MM bonus, hire a driver for Allen and pay him $50,000 a year.

wcg: the risk is high, but so is the reward. The Vikings know their D only lacks a great pass rusher. Couple that with a very good running game and you have a potential playoff team.
Tank: a full-time team-hired driver? I don't think teams are allowed to do that b/c it's a benefit that circumvents the salary cap. But, it's a great idea for such a high-risk player.

I think the J. Allen trade could be one of those rare win-win things. The Vikings D-Line now look pretty impressive - if not scary - to me and the Chiefs really need to get younger. Of course it's a big risk to spend so much on one guy and it may very well backfire as you mention. I'm normally against it but sometimes you have to take chances in life and the chance to get the reigning NFL sack-meister doesn't come by often.
Don't you think the 49ers would have done everything to get Allen if they hadn't already picked up Smith in FA?

Probably not much.
Most mocks I've seen have Denver taking an O lineman in the 1st, so it really shouldn't affect that portion of it.

Looks like a good deal for the Gurls Personally, I'm still glad he's not a Niner, but (as much as I hate the Gurls) I think they covered themselves pretty well in case Pacman doesn't get reinstated. If he does, then they have arguably the best starting set of CB's in the league. And I agree that their lockerroom is heading for a messy meltdown if they keep collecting head cases.

Dolphins are looking to trade Jason Taylor for a 1sr round pick.

I think anyone would be stupid to trade a 1st round pick for a 30 something y/o player that's obviously starting to look forward to a life beyond football.

John Clayton reported that he doesn't anticipate any team doing that trade. Maybe a 3rd or 4th but not a 1st. Parcells just putting that out there in hopes of gaining another 1st rounder.

-McCloughan said any trade considerations (for Miami's Jason Taylor for example) wouldn't be entertained until after the draft. He also suggested the team might re-connect with linebacker Takeo Spikes after the draft as well. Spikes visited the facility last month and is also weighing offers. If signed, Spikes would probably start for the 49ers at the "ted" linebacker spot, and starting is a selling point, according to McCloughan, for the former Pro Bowl player. http://www.49ersparadise.com/cgi-bin/news/news.cgi?action=display&num=16949
