Free agents?
« on: October 29, 2007, 12:02:35 AM »

Should the 49ers wind up going say 5 and 11, can we still get free agents to come to the team? I know we'll have the money, but can we get anybody that is willing to come to the team?

I posted this in another section but I guess it should have gone here...

Rice released by the Colts ,should we pick him up ?

The Broncos released him a few weeks ago and the Colts picked Rice up because Freeney had to go on IR. Rice got 1 sack while playing as a reserve in only 2 games for the Colts.  He is a 12 year vet and may not have much left BUT do any of you think he might fit in well for our pass rush starved line for this year and maybe one more?  Or is he done ?

I think Rice is done.  He's been dropped by Tampa, Denver, and the Colts this season, so something is obviously wrong with him.  He's a washed up 43 DE that would most likely only sniff the field in our nickel package and has only registered 1 sack and 7 tackles so far this year.  So it would be a mistake to bring him in, imo.

Let McDonald continue to get a little more seasoning instead, it could pay dividends in the future.

KS: I agree.  Rice looks like he's done.  He was signed by teh Broncs, and sucks.  He says they weren't using him right, , starts pouting on the bench and manages to get his release.  Gets signed by teh Colts (a natural looking fit).  He plays for them for 2 weeks, gets a sack--but all reports says he looks very slow and was largely ineffective.

No way i'd sign him.

We wont' have any real trouble getting FAs to come here.  Money talks for the most part.  Guys like Haynesworth, Suggs, and Dansby shoudl be our first priorities and we have a good chance of getting them to come here.

From Matt M....
49ers tried to add rookie D-lineman
When the Patriots waived rookie defensive lineman Kareem Brown on Tuesday, the 49ers took notice. In fact, they put in a roster claim. However, the 49ers were turned away because the New York Jets were also interested. Brown was assigned to the Jets because they have a worse record than the 49ers.

Three teams claimed Brown: the Jets, 49ers and Ravens. Brown (6-4, 295) was a fourth-round pick of the Patriots

I know this was a horse we beat to death in here last year, but would anyone be upset if we brought in Lance Briggs next year?  If I remember right, the arguments against him were:

1)  He doesn't fit and/or doesn't want to play in a 34 system
2)  He ask for too much $ - we can't tie up that kind of dough in the LB position.
3)  He is excelling because he is surrounded by great talent on defense - he would not be as much of an impact player on our defense.

I am sure I am forgetting some arguments but I think that hits the high points.  Even though I feel there is some validity to those arguments, I feel like it would be a good plan to bring him in.  I would pair him with Willis inside and draft TBC's replacement (or just use Haralson).

Note:  Briggs may not even be a free agent next year if he doesn't play in at least twelve games, so this could be a moot point.

Sam Adams got released by Denver.  It isn't like we can do worse at NT.

Sam Adams is just another Simon Rice. Once was great but time to hang it up. I like the guy but I dont think he is worth signing.

Adams would be an interesting pickup.  It looks like he has really lost much of what he was.

I can't believe we put in a claim for Kareem Brown.  WHY?  Do we need ANOTHER DL listed as inactive every game?  We signed Ellison--he hasn't seen the field.  McDonald has been inactive for several games this year too.  I don't see us needing another player the coaches refuse to play.

In the days leading up to the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 16, the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers thought they had struck a great deal.

Chicago was willing to send linebacker Lance Briggs to the 49ers for an unspecified draft pick. The 49ers were going to get a player they coveted, and Briggs, who the Bears expect to lose in free agency this offseason, was finally going to get a long-term contract.

Briggs was willing to give San Francisco something of a discount on the deal for two reasons: First, he wanted the security of a long-term pact. Second, he grew up in Sacramento, Calif., located roughly two hours from San Francisco.

The deal worked for all parties. But before it could be finalized, the new contract had to be approved by the NFL. That's where it hit a snag, according to two NFL sources. That snag may prove to be a catalyst for change this offseason in some of the rules regarding trades.

San Francisco couldn't give Briggs a new contract because he was a franchise player during the 2007 offseason. Under league rules, a franchise player can't sign a long-term contract after July 15 of a league year – neither with the team that franchised him nor another team. Briggs reported to Bears camp this season after that deadline and without a new deal.

Read that also D.  Makes you wonder what the 49er's were willing to give Briggs in terms of a long term contract.  Makes you again wonder if he will be the person that they target during FA or if it is to late for something like that to happen?

Could you imagine the speed at linebacker with Willis, Briggs and Lawson?!?!?  Briggs could play outside or in...moore could play in if he went out, Haralson could play out if he went in...dang...that would be a fast LB Core.

Hard to say what the compensation would have been, we no doubt could have locked him up, we have the bread baby! I  really would not be surprised if they do target him in fa, we know how aggressive McNolan are when the covet a player ie. Nate C. last winter!

Holy Crap!!!  Funny how I was just talking about Briggs - I wish that deal would have gone through!  Hopefully we can sign him in the offseason.  That would give us one of the best LB corps in the league!

What would you guys have given for him?  Our late 1st round pick?  Our early 2nd?  No higher than a 3rd?  He's a very good LB (at least in the cover 2) and 27 years old.  Personally, I would put him inside with Willis and try Moore at TBC's spot.

I would have given up the First for him...if that wasn't enough, give the first and swap the seconds so they get a higher second and we get their lower second.  I would have gone for that.

I think inside with Willis would be awesome...except one of them has to sacrifice and take on the blocker.  I think Moore would be better suited for that to free up Willis and use Briggs speed on the outside rushing the passer.  That is just me.

Lance Briggs, UFA, Chicago Bears
Since 2004, Briggs has been a standout linebacker for the Bears. He’s overshadowed by Brian Urlacher much of the time, but Briggs gets the job done as is evidenced by the fact that he’s totaled more than 100 tackles in each of the past three seasons and that he’s added four sacks and five interceptions over that time. Teams are going to line up to try and entice Briggs to come play for them, and whichever team lands him will be adding one of the top weak-side defenders in the league. The chances of Briggs leaving seem good.

Briggs played in his 12th game for the bears last night, ensuring he can't be tagged again this year.  Hopefully he likes the idea of playing with Willis and gives us a chance to sign him in the offseason.  That would be huge!

Cap:  good points.  Doesn't matter where we would put him, though - we will be a better team with him than without.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

"His market value is unclear.  Many league insiders recognize that the stats of a weakside linebacker in a Tampa Two defense are skewed (or, as Brian Baldinger would say, "skewered") by the fact that the weakside linebacker usually runs free in space while the defensive linemen tie up blockers.  Earlier this year, weakside linebacker Cato June received only $12 million over three years from the Bucs -- it's a decent payday, but not the kind of number that will prompt jaws to drop."

What, exactly, would you pay for him? You think it'll be only 12-15 mill like June?

I would have given up the First for him...if that wasn't enough, give the first and swap the seconds so they get a higher second and we get their lower second. I would have gone for that.

If the team would've given a 1st for Briggs, they wouln't have a chance to draft Willis.

On the surface, it appears to be a bit of an odd trade. After all, Briggs plays a position at which the 49ers are deep. Their best player is Patrick Willis, also an inside linebacker. The 49ers have to feel good about their depth.

Derek Smith is a starter who is having a better year than a year ago - though Nolan admits Smith's play has dropped off since the 2005 season. Jeff Ulrich is seeing more and more time in the 49ers' "Big Sub" package. And one of the 49ers' best players from last season, Brandon Moore, is now the team's No. 4 inside linebacker.

I think they are talking about this past trade deadline - making the first round pick in question the one we got from the colts for the 2008 draft.

As far as salary goes, I would think his numbers will be similar to June's.  I would not be upset if we paid him 15 mil for 3 seasons (I think we still have the cap space).  I think it may take a bit more, but how would you be willing to go?

Maybe.

But do they really need to spend a 1st round pick on what might arguably be a strong part of the team? Wouldn't they be better off using that pick in the draft or targeting another FA on either line or WR?

KS It would have been our 08 first rounder (assuming that is what was on the table which I doubt), more likely it was our 2nd rounder, who knows.

And at this point...there will be no draft choices involved to sign him.  The bears agreed not to franchise him again this year, so he will become a free agent.  I don't care what MM says.  That much speed at linebacker would be outstanding.  All we really need is a stud NT to shore up the D-line.  I think Fields and McDonald would be a great rotation at DE with Douglas if he signs after the season as well.  Soap is a good back up and we cut our loses with Franklin...disappointment.

I hear you Cap. would love to see it happen.  Thing is as you well know we are going to have huge needs on both lines, not too mention, wr (if we go fa), wonder how many rookies will start for us on both lines next year?  I could easily see 2 one on the d. line, one on the o. line?

We still have allot of needs/holes to fill, depth to create.  It will be fun watching McNolan restock the roster....
