What to look forward to
« on: May 12, 2007, 03:06:56 PM »

The 2007 version of the 49ERS should be very exciting to follow. With the dramatic offseason pickups to the 2007 draft class, this team has made major upgrades. Just sitting here thinking about the team we fielded in 2004 and how horrible it felt watching them fail over and over, well it was just down right out humbling.

As 49ER fans we have grown to expect certain things from our team. We expect them to win, we expect them to win the NFC West, and we expect them to contend year after year for the ultimate prize, the Super Bowl. Well after 3 draft classes and 1 big free agency spending spree, we can now have those expectations again, except now, I for one will appreciate it so much more.

This is the year the Niners can finally install the 3-4 defense full time. This is the year we will attack the opposing teams quarterback while confusing offensive lineman, since they will have no clue where the blitz will be coming from. This is the year we will shut down the other teams best receiver with Nate Clements. You see, defense wins championships, and if you are a hard core fan of football, you already know that. This version of the 49ERS will be very interesting on both sides of the ball, but defense is where I will have my eye.

I find myself getting excited thinking about Manny Lawson coming back next year with the experience he earned in 2006, stronger, faster, and much more wiser. He should be a force in coverage and attacking the quarterback. Tully Banta-Cain will bring what we need more than anything and that is experience, not just any experience, New England Patriot experience. He has been learning the 3-4 from the team that has mastered it, and now he is bringing that knowledge to San Francisco. Aubrayo Franklin will give us that interior lineman NT, that mean son of a gun, who should hold the point of attack and keep the offensive lineman off of our Linebackers and Safety's, allowing them to roam free and drive teams crazy, as they tackle, sack, and punish. Oh and do not forget since we have the luxury of having Nate Clements on an island and trusting him alone without safety help, we can bring up Michael Lewis and let him do what he does best, play the line of scrimmage.

I could go on and on about all the exciting new players we have here in San Francisco, but it is safe to say the most exciting asset we have obtained in the last 12 months is knowledge and experience. Players come out of college and you hear it all the time how the game is much faster, and they are having a hard time getting adjusted, well besides the fact that we have had one of the best offseasons ever, we also will have the 2005 and 2006 draft classes bursting with confidence.

Coach Nolan already has his hands full keeping them grounded, mainly because the team can see how good they can be, but right now they have to work together to become a team. Now if this squad can become a team and put it all together, Offense, Defense, and Special Teams, than we can all expect BIG BIG THINGS.

So hold your drink up and lets have a toast to the 2007 San Francisco 49ERS. Be proud at the fact we can now expect to win again, more importantly be proud that we have a team that No one can really say anything negative about. That is the first time I can truly say either of those comments in a long time. Now that is what I call something to look forward to.

Go 49ERS!

I'll hold my glass up and toast them when they show improvement come game time, win more games, win the battle in the trenches, win close games, don't get blown out when they do lose, don't whimp out when they're an inch and goal-to-go, use their offensive weapons and dictate the game rather than respond to it (and yes I understand that sometimes you CAN dictate the game by responding to what the defense shows) which brings me to my next point which is to let Alex run the offense and call more audibles and be the man out there, for our defense to really pressure the QB and actually get to him more and disrupt the offense and not get beaten for the big play.......

THEN, IF they make the playoffs, they then prove that they DESERVE to be there and not get whipped early on.....

I will be able to hold up my glass and toast the team then but no sooner......

 Cool

Thanks for the optimistic read ... I know we are all flying high these days, but like twins suggests.  it's dangerous to get ahead of ourselves.

Thanks jc & your right we did get spoiled and this time around most of us will appreciate the winning/contending alot more.  Like the fellas said while we do have alot to be thankful for and this team looks good on paper, the game is played on grass & we need to see this team perform on the field.  I am cautiously optomistic that we are going to have a very solid season.

You guys are somewhat missing the point, that read is to simply remind us of where we came from. Please do not think I am saying this team is ready for the superbowl, I am not saying that, All I want everyone to do is fly up in a helicopter and look at the bigger picture here. We have an excellent chance to be very good this year and make some waves, but I am more happy to say we finally have something to look forward to for a change. Nolan has provided us with a great front office, we are making all the right moves, we are picking up all the right people, with good character, and work ethic. We have a solid coaching staff & leadership, that is all the makings for something to look forward to, and more importantly, a team headed in the right direction.

I for one will TRY not to pick this team apart and just try to enjoy what has happened the last 3 months. I am excited for the first time in 3 years. Go 49ers!

I tend to view football for what it is, the one place and time in my life that I do not have to hedge my bets or be careful with my optimism.  For me, football is blind, unadulterated, hooliganism and in the offseason, when the 49ers are still undefeated, they are always a sure lock for the super bowl.  So I choose to toast, I choose to get my hopes up, I choose to cheer for the greatest football team that has ever been.  Sure, I'll cry in my glass when they go 6-10, but hey, ain't the fact that I can get up the next morning and truly forget about my team for a week with no consequences part of what makes football great?

Here's to getting our hopes up for 2007!!

thanks Jason, that is what I am talking about right there!!! Everyone has a decision to make everyday, be negative or be positive, you make this decesion when you wake up in the morning, roll out of bed, and I hope you all take a shower...LOL... But we have to all be positive, for gods sake we finally have something to be positive about.

I am toasting to the 2007 Niners, we will crush the NFC WEST!!!!!
Brian,

I have to comment on you and Twins, It is not our place to get the team ready, that is the coaching staffs issue, my personal opinion is our job is to get the 49er faitful excited about the season. There is no way Nolan will let these guys fall asleep on their potential.

Nolan has already told the team to understand they have to pay the price, that is why he has built this team on character and leadership.

I have not been this excited about the niners in 3-5 years. There is no limit to how good we can be, and the cool part is last year we picked up Harris and Allen after the draft, can you imagine if we can get lucky and get a FS or another defensive starter.

What happened to 11-5, 1st place in the West and deep in the playoffs.......  Wink

I am getting excited but I have been pretty much since Nolan took over. He has shown steady progress with low-key signings, shrewd trades and roster moves all while the salary cap has improved vastly  Smiley Finally we are at a point where significant signings have been made and McNolans own draft picks dominate the roster.

I am travelling halfway across the world to SF for 2 december games (Vikings and Bengals) with the expectation to see a balanced competitive team hopefully securing the playoff birth in one of these games. My hopes are up......as always  Wink

I really feel that we can win 10 or 11 games as long as we stay healthy & play smart football.  Under Nolan I have not doubt that we will be a smart team on the field but we will also need some luck too pull it off.  We have 2 new rookie coordinators and alot of new players that will have to gell at just the right time.  Still, that being said I have a great vibe as we enter the middle of May.  Training camp is about 10 weeks out Grid & then the fun really starts! Smiley  Like you my glass is always 1/2 full...  No mater what happens I have no doubt we are going to continue to make progress starting in about 15 weeks! Wink  I really hope when you are over here for those 2 games we are hitting on all cylinders as we rock & roll towards our first play off appearence in several years! Smiley

"Smith shuffles out to his right, he can't find anybody open, pumps once, fires down the sideline, finds Vernon Davis in the end zone! Touchdown 49ers!" All year baby!!!!!!! and....

"The oppossing offense cannot find any rythm this afternoon due the 49ers relentless defence!"

"Its a, I formation, Davis in motion, Smith takes the snap, counter lead to Gore, he sheds a tackle, he of to the 35, 40, 45, 50! He's goin all the way, nobody's gonna catch him! Touchdown San Francisco!"

Now I say get excited and get ready because the niners are back! Grin

I think 16-0 is not such a crazy possibility.  We could possibly lose to Seattle once if the team plane gets grounded from fog in San Francisco, but otherwise I'm thinking that Frank Gore ends up with say.. 3200 yards, Smith throws for maybe.. 40 TDs and Lawson gets.. conservatively, I'd say, 25 sacks..

I am going to do something before opening day that I haven't done since the last time we were in the playoffs.  I am going to Merton Hanks chicken dance all the way to the bar.

I heard Shawn Salsbury (I am pretty sure it was him on with Clayton) on ESPN radio the other day say that the Niners and the Pats were the two most improved teams in the NFL and he said the Niners could go 11-5 or 8-8 ,depending on how soon all their new players and coaches came together and started playing well together.

For Sean Salisbury to say anything nice about the 49ers means something. That guy has nothing but dissed the Niners over the last two years.

I actually think that 40 TD's for Smith this year is a little low, I am thinking more around the 75 TD's....LOL!! I also think Gore will break the season rushing record and go for 5800 yards. Vernon will catch 150 passes for 25 TD's....This is fun

I think Cain and Lawson will together sack the hell out of every quarterback we face, break a couple of pretty boys in half along the way for 50 sacks.

Nolan might stick his foot out and trip someone just for the crap of it.

We will have the #1 ranked defense and offense.

16-0

The game still needs to be played because anything can happen on any given Sunday and unforseen disasters and injuries could still take place.

And now some are thinking what Salisbury is saying about the niners is some cool stuff? You guys are actually listening to this guy? I mean, what has he ever done that deserves such admiration and credibility?

Isn't this the same person who almost lost his gig for sending pictures of his private parts via cellphone to female staffers?

And since this is actually posted in the Administrative and Corner Messages as an Exclusive, don't you think it would be wise to preclude this with a disclaimer that not all corner threads are this far fetched?

Otherwise it should be in the Post Game Show imo because our visitors who come here looking for credible information may think we'll let anyone say whatever they want WHEREVER they want.

I too am very excited about the upcoming season.  But my enthusiasm is tempered by the glaring fact that we just picked up a bunch of very raw talent and we're going to throw them in the mix with two virgin coordinators.  Scott M is doing a fantastic job IMHO.  Every pick, from hiring Nolan to the trades he made this year, screams "this guy knows what he's doing!".  Too bad we won't see a lot of those new guys on the field until next year.  Now the job falls on Nolan and his coaches.  Unfortunately, two virgin coordinators and Nolan's wobbly calls have me a little worried.  I believe NEXT year will be fantastic.

I'm looking for a team that has a top 5 offense (1 run 7 pass) and D that is in the middle 12 to 20.  They will win more than loss and be in all but 1 game for the year.  They will be the new niners.   Smiley

I am completely psyched for the season and to see what this team can really do.  But all that excitement is overshadowed by my wait and see attitude.  I guess I've just been burned before by getting too excited too quick.

I think we have something here, and I'm cautiously optimistic I guess you could say.

Okay I got a beef with some of these picks, but overall I don't think I'm being overconfident.  It's up to you guys to decide.

Sept. 10   vs. Arizona     7:15 p.m...WIN: I agree.  Big home game, Monday Night, big statement game here, perhaps almost too big since one of the goals this year is proving they can beat Arizona.

Sept. 16   at St. Louis    10 a.m.....WIN: I agree.  New coach for the Rams, and they haven't done much to improve themselves as of yet.

Sept. 23   at Pittsburgh    10 a.m.....LOSS: I'm leaning that direction but hoping for a surprise or two.  Perchance our improved defense will prevail against Pittsburgh's aging Hines Ward and pedestrian offense under another new head coach.  Jerry Porter is gone, too.

Sept. 30   vs. Seattle    1:05 p.m....WIN: Yep.  Pretty much thinking that.  49ers have improved, Seattle has not, really.  Deion Branch is nice, but whatever.

Oct. 7    vs. Baltimore    1:15 p.m....Loss.  If they can beat Baltimore, why wouldn't they beat Pittsburgh?  Is it because it's at home?  I think a close loss to Baltimore.  49ers still have a lot to show offensively, and McNair is much more dangerous than Roethlisberger.

Oct. 21    at NY Giants    10 a.m....WIN: Giants haven't done much to better themselves.

Oct. 28    vs. New Orleans   1:15 p.m....Win.  Reggie Bush is entertaining, but statistically not that effective.  49ers have to prove the ability to beat a playoff team and will be up for this.

Nov. 4    at Atlanta    10 a.m....LOSS: Atlanta will be tough at home, but what's this marquee player injury crap?  Reverberations of Garrison Hearst?  Come on, now.  We can't predict injuries.

Nov. 12    at Seattle    5:30 p.m....LOSS: Yeah, I agree.

Nov. 18    vs. St. Louis    1:15 p.m....WIN: Agree again.

Nov. 25    at Arizona    1:05 p.m....Win.  49ers have to win a big divisional game on the road like they did agains St. Louis.  They lose to the 'hawks at Seattle, they come back big against 'zona.

Dec. 2    at Carolina    10 a.m.....LOSS: I agree.

Dec. 9    vs. Minnesota    1:05 p.m....WIN:  Vikes can't play on our grass in December!

Dec. 15    vs. Cincinnati   5:15 p.m....Win.  This year's Bengals aren't that different from last year's Bengals, and Nolan is stinging from the earlier AFC losses.  Gotta win this.

Dec. 23    vs. Tampa Bay    5:15 p.m....WIN: Even the plucky Jeff Garcia, no doubt starting this week, is too old to pull it out.

Dec. 30    at Cleveland    10 a.m.....WIN:  The Browns.  The Rookie.  The FRANK GORE MACHINE in December.

10-6 record, 1st or 2nd place in the division, depending on the 4-game win streak to close out.  Wildcard berth if 2nd.

Those are mine.

Welcome to the dise, sr!

I believe Manusky will be a great "virgin coordinator" and an immediate upgrade over Billy Davis and I look forward to seeing him calling the defensive shots which again will give Nolan better time to focus on game management.

Everything I have read about Manusky from when we hired him until the mini-camp has indicated that he is a very bright, young, talented, up-and-coming coach in this league. The mini-camp reviews stated that he was very hands-on and involved, which is quite different than what we heard about Billy Davis.

Loved what I read about his coaching a few days ago after we wrapped up our mini.  Sounds like he was one of the most intense coaches on the field, very hands on, chewing ass when he needed too, very intense teacher that the players all responded too.  I love the fact that he is holding our young players accountable.  I think I also read that he could barely talk when we wrapped up mini camp! Smiley  We have all read that the players are taking on the personality of our coach, & it really sounds like Manusky is alot like Nolan as well!  Training camp is going to be very intense....
