I like the sounds of him too and the few highlights I have seen the kid looks like a player! Smiley
"The kid is the real deal," Bahhur said. "You are talking about an athletic receiver; he has some moves."

Jones will be on display this week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Jones, from Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., is being billed as this season's Marques Colston. He's 6 feet 4, 208 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds.

 Cheesy

Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii
One of the most intriguing players in the draft, Alama-Francis began his career as a basketball player for the Rainbow Warriors. He's a terrific athlete and emerging talent, who put on about 40 pounds prior to his senior season and has seen his stock soar in recent months.
Allen Barbre, OT, Missouri Southern State
In a draft lacking top left tackle prospects, Barbre is the type of mobile athlete who could go a little higher than he normally would. He doesn't have great bulk -- and the level of competition he played against is obviously a concern -- but he should put up some impressive times in workouts and could shoot up draft boards.
Jacoby Jones, WR, Lane
Everyone is looking for the next Marques Colston, and while that is obviously a very rare case, Jones could be the next great sleeper prospect at wide receiver. The former track star was one of the stars of the East West Shrine game -- just like Colston. If he runs as well as expected, he could be selected in the first three rounds.

He's not really a sleeper, but I think Robert Meachem is better the Jarrett or Rice and if he's there in the 2nd (and we don't get a WR in free agency) I'd jump all over him.

I would as well however, no way he lasts until the 2nd round after that workout.   I would take him over Jarret everyday of the week twice on Sundays! Shocked Grin Wink

Mayock was actually raving about him at the Senior Bowl and they brought him on to the set to talk twice, so he's actually been on the radar for awhile.  He had a nice year and the physical tools are there, so he most likely will go in the first two rounds.

I have stated in a couple other threads that I think we should do whatever it takes to get this guy. I really like him. I also think they should go after Steve Smith of USC. After the combine, I would stay away from a WR at number 1 and try to pick up these two guys in the 3 rd or 4th rounds.

I could be off on this but it seems to me Jason Hill has the same build/body type and style as Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt. Before everyone freaks out, i am not saying he will be near as productive as them, but his style of play reminds me of them. Good route runner with very good speed. I wouldn't mind a bit if the niners traded back up into the second round to get him.

They were talking about him at the Senior Bowl and he was on the radar, but he wasn't believed to be more than a 3rd-5th round draft choice.  With his 40 time, he looks like now he will go before the end of the second.

Anthony Spencer.  He may not be a sleeper, but I really like him as a 3-4 LB/ 4th down DE. Undersized but a pass rush monster.

Question: Do you think James Jones is a poor mans Boldin?  Where do you see him going? and what do you think of him?
Scott_Wright:  Yea, he is going to be an interesting guy in the later rounds.  Good athlete, solid build and really came on as a senior.

Question:  Who are your favorite late round sleepers in the draft, Scott?
Scott_Wright:  I really like West Virginia WR Brandon Mylers and it boggles my mind that he didn't get a Combine invite.  After Dwayne Bowe he might have been the most consistently impressive wideout at the Senior Bowl.  He has ideal size and speed and just didn't get many opportunities to shine in the Mountaineers run-oriented offense.  He could be a major steal for someone.

http://www.49ersparadise.com/cgi-bin/news/news.cgi?action=display&num=11940

Does anyone know anything about these sleepers he is talking about I have never heard of them.

Brian Leonard did well for the running back group. He opted to take his Combine numbers and only do the positional workout. He showed he can catch the football, good agility, change of direction, basically everything you see on tape with him, he showed at the workout.

It went very well. We won’t put the name out but there was a surprise DB who ran extremely fast and worked out very well!

http://www.sf49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=2901&section=PR%20News

 1. Brian Leonard, Rutgers

Positives: Size (6-foot-1-plus, 226 pounds), strength, and athleticism ... Good inside runner and has the field vision and instincts to be surprisingly effective running outside ... Toughness; withstands hard hits and keeps running while securing the ball ... Excellent pass-catching and route-running ability -- so good that he even lined up at wide receiver in college ... Can play tailback as well as fullback.

Negatives: Needs to improve his blocking, which raises a red flag in a talented player who otherwise has traits that many teams value in a fullback.

Scoots: way to get out on teh limb, buddy.  LOL.

A guy i see going in rd 3 or 4 and really playing well is Manny Ramirez, and OG from Texas Tech.  He's 335 and can pass block well--Tech plays a run n shoot offense.

D: The first question was mine to Scott. James Jones is a WR from San Jose State I happened to catch a little of their bowl game and he stood out. But what really impressed me was Insta Juice Bowl where he caught a great TD and really reminded me of Anquan Boldin. He isn't big size-wise but is very strong. At 6-1 207 he benched 225 22 times tops out of all the WR's at the combine. He does not have great straight ahead speed but neither did Boldin.  Jones ran a 4.59 in his pro day and if i remember right Boldin ran like a 4.89 something horrible. Everything else i have read said he has looked good in drills and does a good job catching the ball away from his body. Right now he is a for sure 2nd day guy. I would assume he could be had in the 5th or 6th round. I am hoping since San Jose State is the niners backyard Sullivan has taken a peak at him.

What round will Fresno State WR Paul Williams be taken in and could he end up on our radar? The kid looks like a player!

Shawn: I could really see the 49ers taking him in the 4th Round. William's stock has been up and down over the course of the past year. He has all of the tools that you look for in a receiver, but wasn't as productive as you would have liked.

I think this is my fav. sleeper in the draft (thanks CC) if we can get him in the 4th I would be thrilled.

I wouldn't say i like him more D. I am just saying that I like his value in the round he should be taken.  Paul Williams has more Raw talent obviously, its just i see a simlarity between Jones and Boldin's game.

Just read up on him you have prob. seen this but if not:

—WR James Jones — Several mock drafts had Jones as a potential seventh-round pick as of early February. A lot can change before draft day, but if nothing else, Jones (6-1, 205, 4.57) should have a legitimate chance of sticking with an NFL team.

I mentioned Brian Smith from Missouri earlier in this thread and i finally found some info on him. This is an exert from former draft chat guest Scott Wright.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4887
Quote
The update on Brian is the following Scott. He did position drills for Jacksonville, Miami, New York Giants and Tampa Bay on 3/22 at Mizzou second pro day. Was not completely 100% but performed well and worked through some soreness during the drills. Jacksonville had there D Line coach in attendance. He also did 21 reps on 225.

The hip bone has healed and he is just getting acclimated in running, jumping and cutting. He is not at 100% at this moment but will be there by draft day. We are looking to schedule a workout at Mizzou for April 2nd or 3rd were he will complete all the running workout test. This will be confirmed on Mon. or Tues of next week once we get with the doctors and medical staff.

He has visits set up with Chicago and Jacksonville. Cleveland is planning on setting up a visit next week. We have also had interest significant interest from Miami, Tampa, Giants and 49ers. I have been contacted by 15 teams inquiring about him."

As for the WR sleeper argument I lean towards Higgins from UTEP but Williams from Fresno State is pretty good as well.  Both of them can play and I wouldn't mind either in the 3rd or 4th round.

Great update -Thanks.  I mentioned the guy a while back in this thread too but had not heard anything about him in a while.  Depending on his physical, I would like to see us target this kid in the 4th.  I might even give up our third round comp to get him if the docs said he was 100% and there were no long term risks.  I've watched him play his entire college career and I really believe he would have been the top OLB in this draft if he hadn't gotten hurt. jmho

Thanks for the update on Brian Smith ntodd.

I agree 100% with KS Niner and believe that Brian Smith would be a fantastic pick in the 4th at OLB. If he is just about back to full strength now, by the start of training camp he should be ready to go full tilt. This guy has Manny Lawson type talent imo - only injuries have kept him from being a first round draft pick.

Actually guys i would be surprised if he was taken that high. He was a great talent for the Tigers before he was hurt. But this is a pretty serious injury. Teams usually shy away from guys who have a rough medical past. I think he will be closer to a 5th or 6th round pick.

Tony Hunt from Penn State.  He is a hard runner and reminds me a lot of Frank Gore.  If he is still around in the 3rd or 4th I think that he is too good to pass up.  Here is some more on him.

I wouldn't say I would be "surprised" by him going in the fourth, but I would not say it is a certainty either.  Most "gurus" have him going somewhere on the 2nd day (if they even mention him at all).  Personally, I would target him in the fourth to guarantee we get him provided the docs give the okay (with 4 picks in that round this would be the year to do it).  If its true that 15 teams are looking at him, I could easily see someone taking a chance on him in the 4th provided he's really at 100% by draft day.  He could be our "Frank Gore" of the defense.   Granted, none of Gore's injuries were this serious but if the docs say "okay" I think we should take a serious look at him in the fourth.

If we took Tony Hunt we'd have the three hardest running RBs in the league with Gore, Robinson, and Hunt.

Not only would they be the hardest but also some of the youngest.  A 3rd year starter, a 2nd year back-up, and a rookie 3rd string, all with talent and all run hard.
