D-roc,

How about Oregon State safety Sabby Piscatelli as a sleeper in this draft? To me, he projects as a pro FS.

6-3, 224#, 4.49-40  Very fast, hard hitter, smart, and aggressive.

From Rookiepedia:

Played at the East West Shrine Game and had a great performance … Impressed with his tackling against the run and had the biggest hit of the game … Great size … Runs a 4.5 forty … Explosive … Preseason all-PAC 10 selection in 2006 … Ballhawking playmaker … Great leader … Instinctive … Recorded 53 tackles, 4 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries as a Junior … Physical in coverage … Contributes on special teams … Big hitter ... Versatile, lining up all over the field and covering all kinds of receivers ... Good open field tackler and blitzer … Good performance both in run support and in coverage in upset win over USC … Upended Dwayne Jarrett on a screen pass and had a big collision with Chauncey Washington, although he got hurt on the play … Good coverage support in the endzone and also had a pass defensed on a deep throw … Also had a big hit on special teams, but couldn't stop RB one-on-one at the goalline … Great performance against Oregon … Showed off range and closing speed to knock away a long throw to the sideline and stuffed a run near the goalline and almost stripped the ball loose … Also knocked the ball away from receivers to force incompletions three times, once in the endzone and once on 3rd down … Did miss a tackle on a WR screen to the sideline

Has straight line speed over lateral quickness.

At least one mock has him going to the Bucs at the top of the 3rd round, but there's a chance he could drop to us a little further down. He may have the makings of another Ronnie Lott.

Or, how about ;

Courtney Brown (Cal-Poly SLO) 6-2, 200#, 4.35-40

He is so good nobody will throw near him, thus low stats. He's big, scary fast, and a natural athlete.

From Rookiepedia:

    * 41.5-inch vertical jump
    * 10'11" broad jump
    * 4.07-second short shuttle
    * 40yd dash timed in the mid-4.3's

Rising many draft boards, best early Pro Day sessions belong to Cal Poly CB Courtney Brown. Brown wasn't invited to the Combine due speed concerns, Brown's efforts on March 6 at San Jose State closed that argument with times in the 4.3s. Brown's second attempt was timed at 4.32, matching the top time in Indianapolis this year by (Arkansas CB Chris Houston). His workout numbers were very impressive at either Combine or Pro Days.

The most mind-boggling part is that, Brown isn't a "workout warrior." He missed nearly the entire 2004 season with a torn ACL, but returned in 2005 to earn D-IAA All-American honors with seven interceptions. Timed at a 4.60 last spring, Brown entered his senior season discounted by some scouts, yet rarely challenged by the opposition, leading to less than eye-popping statistics in 2006 (one interception, seven pass break ups, 55 tackles). With size, athleticism and obvious upside, Brown certainly won't be overlooked any more.

I've seen him going to the 9ers in the late 4th on one mock draft, but I think he won't last past the early 4th. Being from a small school has kept him out of the spotlight, but he looks like a player. Projects as a replacement for W. Harris.

Canuck nice prospects thanks for the info I just wonder if we will go with a safety this year with guys like V. Vaughn entering his 2nd season?  He sounds like he really impressed the coaches last year and might have a bright future with us if he lives up to the ability they feel he has.  It might come down to the bpa in those later rounds if a steal falls.  We could go in a variety of different directions including offensive line, de, maybe even a rb or receiver late... I am ready for us to be on the clock! Smiley

I would take a gamble  NT Walter Thomas 6'4" 370 .  Not Many or that size

 From Nflfans com

Pros: Simply huge. Has amazing agility for a guy of his proportions. Very strong, with good footwork. Looks like a very raw version of Gabe Watson.
Cons: He is the definition of a project player, he is super raw and will have to learn his techniques from scratch. Could benefit from losing 20-30 lbs. Needs to improve his stamina and develop his body to its full potential.

A guy I really like alot is L. Booker who is not getting near the attention that the "elite" rb's are receiving.  He might be a guy we can steal in the 3rd round & if he's available in the 4th it would be thievery!

My hidden gem is DeShawn Wynn RB from Florida. I posted his bio few days ago and will do it again. This dude is big, and fast and has good hands as a receiver too.

Running Back | Senior | Florida
DeShawn Wynn
Height: 5-103/8 | Weight: 232 | 40-Time: 4.48

Official Bio

   Strengths:
Has excellent size and bulk...A terrific athlete with nimble feet...Very good timed speed...Quick with a burst...Runs good routes and has decent hands...Solid vision and natural instincts...Outstanding balance...Adequate blocker...Still has upside.

Weaknesses:
Is not as physical as you'd think and doesn't run inside well...His work ethic and conditioning have been issues...Durability is a concern...Doesn't break very many tackles...Is not a big play threat...He was not very productive...Lacks toughness.

Notes:
Was a top recruit coming out of high school...A classic underachiever who seems to have all the physical tools but doesn't play up to them...Could surprise at the next level but at this point intangibles are holding him back...Boom or bust type.

Here is a CB I think might be a good pick in later rounds/day 2.

Cornerback | Senior | Hampton
Travarous Bain
Height: 6-01/4 | Weight: 182 | 40-Time: 4.43

Official Bio

   Strengths:
Good height with long arms...A terrific natural athlete...Has excellent speed and quickness...Explosive with a burst to close and break up passes...Wraps up as a tackler...Can also contribute as a return man...A terror in the open field...Upside.

Weaknesses:
Needs to bulk up and get stronger...Somewhat raw in terms of technique and will need to be coached up...Is not very physical or aggressive...Hands and ball skills are question marks...Didn't emerge until he dropped down a level in competition.

Notes:
Son of former University of Miami defensive back Tolbert Bain (1984-87)...Began his college career with the Hurricanes, where he was also on the track team, but transferred in 2004 in search of more playing time...Has all the physical tools and the majority of his flaws are correctable...In recent years we have seen a bunch of small school defensive backs do well in the NFL Draft and this guy may be next.
Career Statistics
Year    GP    TKL    PBU    INT    YDS
2002    DNP    -    -    -    -
2003    7    1    0    0    0
2004    8    2    0    0    0
2005    9    28    13    1    72
2006    12    19    6    5    65
Totals    36    50    19    6    137

As a Guard, I believe he could be  project behind Allen/Bass and compete in a year or 2.

Offensive Guard | Senior | B.Y.U.
Jake Kuresa
Height: 6-35/8 | Weight: 322 | 40-Time: 5.25

Official Bio

   Strengths:
Has fantastic size...Is real strong...Proved to be extremely versatile...Athletic with pretty good feet...A hard worker...Is smart and aware...Can physically dominate opponents with his sheer bulk...Once he locks on it's over...Team leader/Captain.

Weaknesses:
Conditioning and stamina are concerns...Agility is sub par...Mobility and range are limited...Needs to play with better pad level...Poor balance...Is not as powerful as he should be...Can do a better job as a run blocker...Is still raw as a technician.

Notes:
Actually began his college career as a defensive tackle...Played guard, tackle and center at one point or another in college...He definitely has some physical tools to work with...Solid developmental type who could surprise if he loses some weight.

I am starting to lean more towards L. Booker over Bush myself after reading that Bush's work ethic is questionable.

Kuresa is just okay in pass blocking, but not at all what the 49ers want as a run blocker.  He doesn't get to the second level well and can't make more than one block.  A few years ago he could make the team, but not anymore.

A RETURN MAN AND 3RD DOWN BACK- GARRET WOLFE
Just watch this video against Ohio State University http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_N4jeoGz2M
Granted it is only one game, but against the #1 ranked team for the better part of last season.  He also had a long TD against Michigan.
Now he will never be a starting RB due to his size and inability to run between the tackles.   You have to remember his small stature is an advantage.  He reminds me of speical returners of the past like Vi Sikahema and more recently Dante Hall.   Would you use a 5th or 6th round pick for a kick returner/punt returner and the best 3rd down back coming out of the backfield!  Watch the video and you be the judge.

For a second I thought I was watching highlights of Reggie Bush.

And now that I've spent just over 4 minutes watching a highlight reel from one game, I'm willing to say that Garret Wolfe will be a playmaker and very useful role player.

I think Michael Coe will be an interesting choice and a bit of a mid round gem.  He was a CB at ARkansas but transferred to some little college when his dad became the HC there.

He could play either CB or S.  Both big and fast.   I'd take him in mid/late rd 4.

49erfreak,
Okay so I wasn't the only one, he reminded me of a poor man's Reggie Bush as well.  Not bad when you consider he pulled off long runs against Ohio State and Michigan.  It's not like the Ohio State defense is not used to a speedster like that.  They had to practice against Ginn for the last few years!  Pretty darn impressive when you consider the competition.  Did Hicks sign?  If he didn't he Garrett Wolfe could definitely be used to supplant Hicks as a return specialist and 3rd down back out of the backfield, but he'd have to be able to block.  By the way can we specify when we say 3rd and 4th round picks.  As we have 2 3rd's and 4 4th's.  I don't see much difference between 3B at #97 and 4A at #104 that's only a 7 pick difference, and there is some variance in team needs between those picks.

garlicboy,
The other guy from last years draft that I thought of when I saw the highlight clip of Wolfe was Maurice Jones Drew.  Although Jones Drew is probably better between the tackles, buth are undersized guys with real speed that can hurt teams in the open field.

Looking at some of Wolfe's stats I am starting to wonder why he's getting almost no love from anyone.

http://niuhuskies.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/wolfe_garrett00.html

scroll down to the "WOLFE BY THE NUMBERS" section .  His stats compare well to DeAngelo Williams who Nolan and a few people in here really liked last year after the senior bowl.

I've still only seen that one highlight reel though so maybe I'll just let the scouts decided how good he is and if he'd fit our team.

49erfreak,
He's put up great numbers, but in a weak conference.  But his major drawback is his size at 5'7" and only 180 pounds he will never be able to run between the tackles!  However as a kick returner his small size is a tremendous advantage.  Remember Dante Hall a few years back, they was talk about him being an MVP candidate due to his special teams ability.  I'm not sure if this guy can be that special in the return game, but he sure has shown that he has some ability in the open field against some quality competition.

OF ALL THE PLAYERS I HAVE INTERVIEWED THIS SPRING, WHO HAS IMPRESSED ME THE MOST?

Because of my daily radio show on Sirius Radio, I get a chance to talk with many of the draft-eligible players, and I must say there are many impressive athletes. So many members of the class of 2007 struck me as mature and grateful to be in a position to be drafted into the NFL.

There's no doubt that the discipline policy standards being set by Commissioner Goodell have already had an effect on this draft class, and for the most part, I expect much less trouble when the class of 2007 enters the league.

Some of my favorite interviews in the past few weeks are more about guys who show a love of the game, the ones with the mental aptitude to make the transition from college football to the pros and simply the men any GM would love to have on his football team. Not all of these candidates are first-round picks, but they sure made a solid impression on me.

1. Anthony Gonzalez, WR Ohio State -- Gonzalez was about as good as it gets. He's extremely bright, has an in-depth knowledge of the game, displays a maturity beyond his years and understands defenses. Gonzalez is earmarked for the second round off his speed and production, but if a team steps up late in the first round it would be a good football decision.

Ted Ginn Jr. : One of the true X factors in this draft. If the Packers stay at No. 16, he's in the mix as an instant and much-needed upgrade on special teams. Ginn Jr. could also be a Viking, Titan or Cowboy.

Name:
James Jones
School:
San Jose State
Best Fit Position/Role:
Wide Receiver
Ideal Scheme/Role:
Split End
Height:
6'1"
Weight:
207 lbs

Teams Interested:
Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers

General Comments:
Jones really came on as a senior when he had 70 receptions for 893 yards and eight touchdowns. Played well in big games. Had two touchdowns in the New Mexico Bowl and a touchdown in the Hula Bowl. Is also able to return punts and averaged 11.5 yards per return. With only great production as a senior, some wonder will if he's a product of head coach Dick Tomey's system. Can also long-snap.
