I like Hunt, I just don't know if he'd be as much value as we could get elsewhere, but I guess we are deep enough that the later rounds are no longer expected to contribute.  It's just odd for me to re-adjust Smiley

Some sleepers/players that I like are
WR: Jason Hill, 2nd
WR: Laurent Robinson from Illinois St., 4th round
WR: Dallas Baker from Florida: could be a very solid #2 possession receiver with Lelie and Davis opening up the middle of the field with their speed., 4th round
WR: Mike Walker UCF: another productive small school guy 5th or 6th round

DE: Darius Sanders Oregon 6'5" 270, he is a bit small for end, put had 9 sacks as senior 6th or if trading down 7th
DE: Xzavie Jackson, 6'4' 275, also a little lean, but can gain some upper body weight, squats over 720 pounds and was productive in college, 4th or 5th round
DE: Baraka Atkins Miami:  put up some numbers at Miami, and was productive, I wish I had film, to see who was double teamed on that line last year?  They also had Kareem Brown and, Marcus Thomas before he got kicked off.  If he put up these numbers facing a double team, he is better than advertised, and Kareem Brown's large sack total without facing double teams is inflated. 3rd or 4th round

QB: Isiah Stanback U-Dub 6'2" 4.6 40, coming off injury, this guy is Michael Vick with Dreds, also played receiver in college, and was good doing it!!!  Do we really want to go into this season with Trent Doofus and Shaun Hill as our back up QB's?  I've never seen Shaun Hill play, but if he didn't even get considered for the starter spot in Minnesota with old Brad Johnoson at QB it's saying something.  Trent Doofus is prett old as well.  Flier on Stanback in the later rounds 4th-6th round.

I refrained from any RB picks because I'd rather resign.  Maurice Hicks and we also have Michael Robinson.  Moran Norris is a stud, and D. Walker is our fullback in passing situations, our H-back or whatever he is, let's see what he can do.  Drafting a bunch of receivers 3, in this draft is not a lot considering, Lelie is only signed for 2 years and that leaves us with Battle and Gilmore (who hasn't  done much).  We can let some of these WR's develop for a couple years while Lelie is hopefully tearing it up.  Let him go as a free agent, due to salary cap and extend (contract) some of these rookie receivers Nolan and company think will have a lot of potential at a decent price ala Keith Lewis.  Whoever they draft, I just hope we have 50% who become solid players/impact players on this team.

I'm sorry J.  I thought this was the general draft board when I first clicked on it.  My apologies, I will transfer the post over to the other one.

As for hidden gems,  I like Louis Leonard (I think that is his name, anyways).  He looks like he could be a solid, space-eating NT that could push the line back.  I also think Manny Ramirez would be a good NT in this league.  I know we can't go off of strength alone (aka ICE), but this guy was a beast on the line.  He didnt seem to break through much in the pass rush, but he was able to push the line back.

J,
Thanks for clarifying about Marcus Thomas a Florida, and Atkins and Brown at Miami.  This makes Brown's and Atkins' statistics a little more impressive knowing they got their sacks being doubled.  I would love to see the gamefilm or does anyone know who faced more double teams Brown or Atkins?

Crag Massei SFI latest

Running Backs who's out there:

"The 49ers need to find a back up for Norris and a swing back if Hicks does not return, and the draft is a place they can get both players, particular with their plethora of mid round picks.  That's where the top true fullbacks prospects such as Alabama's Le' Ron McClain and Virginia's Jason Snelling likely will still be available.  The 49ers also will look at a collection of unheralded prospects at the position.  The prospects at running back are more plentiful, as they always are, and the 49ers could coinsider propects such as Florida State's L. Bookeer and Ohio State's Antonio Pitman as high as the third round and MIami's Tyrone Moss and Notre Dame's Darius Walker as low as the fifth round."

HOW ABOUT SOME QUARTERBACKS!!!

Isiah Stanback UW 6'2" 215 4.55 51% completion percentage  22 TD 12 Ints
Kevin Kolb UH 6'2" 218 4.85 61% completion percentage    85 TD 31 Ints
Jared Zabransky  6'2" 219 4.6 62% completion percentage 58TD 37 ints

No question Alex Smith is our future quarterback, but having a quality back-up quarterback is vital.  Our back ups are Trent Doofus who is 35 (and has nothing to offer besides mentoring Alex Smith whose Jedi transformation to an elite quarterback will be decided this year or next) and Shaun Hill, a young guy, but I'm not so sure what he has to offer.  He is an unknown, the guy hasn't played in a game in the NFL for the last 5 years.  The fact that he had a chance to start in Minnesota and was given an opportunity is not a good sign.  I think they should take a flier on a quarterback in the 4th-6th rounds.  I like Isiah Stanback from the U-Dub.  This guy is an athletic exciting type of player but also a field general.  I remember watching a few UW games and remarking how good he was as a receiver.  As a QB, you could see his athleticism and his leadership which really stood out.  The offense had confidence with him in the game.  He obviously needs work as passer with a 51% completion percentage, but he did pass for 22 TD's and only 12 int's.  These stats indicate that he is not forcing passes, he will throw it away and not take a sack.  I'd be worried if his number of Int's were equal to his TD's.   Kevin Kolb  out of Houston is another guy I like, but I might prefer Kolb over Stanback, but I wouldn't wast anything higher than a 4th rounder on him, I think he may get drafted in the 3rd.  Knock on him, is that he used the shotgun formation in college, but so did Alex Smith, and he's looking pretty good right now.  Guy was a flatout stud in college, and if you've seen him play, you know what I mean.  Zabransky has been compared to Jeff Garcia need I say more?  Zabransky "finds a way to win." according to http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/qb/jaredzabransky.html  All these guys are athletic, have had success, with lots of upside with similarities to Alex Smith.  I like mobile quarterbacks, cause thats the future, guys who may lack height by an inch or two, but can win games.  These guys can be steals in the draft.  If the 9ers develop any of these guys, let whoever they choose sit for a year and then send hime to NFL Europe and displays star qualities, we can have a 5th round pick potentially be traded for 2 2nd rounders ala Matt Schaub.  The question is, which one would you choose, in which round and what is the deciding factor?  This is where scouts make their money, making choices like this.

Personally I would be surprised if we took a qb at all this year with both Trent D. and S. Hill on this roster; & from what I uderstand the coaches like both those guys alot.

Well, the coaches may like them, but I would not be surprised if the drafted a QB.  This time last year, we had Kevan Barlow, 2nd year Frank Gore (pre-1600 yards), and a solid back up in Maurice Hicks.  It shocked the hell out of me when they drafted Michael Robinson and decided to play him at RB.  So I wouldn't be all that shocked, if they feel there is some definite talent in a QB, they will draft one in the 4th especially with 4 4th rounders if they feel it is worth the investment.

Your right if a solid prospect falls they might take a flyer on him though I would rather see them go after an offensive lineman (perhaps a tackle) if one falls.  Depends on who they have rated higher in the latter part of the draft....  Scotty recently said we would go with bpa & you know these guys are unpredictable on draft day so stay tuned! Thanks D-roc,
I just have nightmares of Smith going down, from some injury and Trent Doofus's age all of a sudden catches up with him, and we put in this guy Shaun Hill this unknown who can't do anything.  I would hate for a stint with our back-ups, cost us a few games and we miss playoffs.  Cause I don't know about anyone else, but I fully expect PLAYOFFS NEXT YEAR BABY!!!

See I have confidence in Trent and think if he had to play a couple games we would be in good hands.  Still, I understand what your saying & the old school in me remembers having S. Young backing up Joe so you can never have to many solid qb's.  I do not know much about Hill but trust me thought Trent can get the job done if called upon.  jmho!

2 quarterbacks are still not enough, if 1 is 35.  Check out the Eagles last year they had Garcia and AJ Feely.  The Pats drafted Matt Kassel and had Testaverde on thier roster as well.  The Seahawks have Hasselback, Senneca Wallace, David Greene and are still trying to pick up David Carr.  I guess you can never have too many quarterbacks and if an opportunity presents itself to draft one in the later rounds you think will excel in your system you draft that QB, especially if you have 10 picks.  Now I really think their gonna draft that QB in the later rounds.  But who are those hidden gems.  Stanback and Zabransky?  They just may be.

D roc
I'd post some stats on Stanback, but I think what I did post should be enough.  His stats weren't that great at QB, but I have cousin who just graduated from the U-Dub, so I'd talk crap about his team when they'd play.  But Stanback was impressive when I watched his games on TV.  Zabransky, I never sam him play except for that crazy ass bowl game.  I think nfldraftcountdown.com and http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=211&p=9&c=12&nid=83&lnid=124&yr=2007 have some great profiles and articles.  Well it was fun in the forum, but now I have to go and be productive.

Questions: Are there any Frank Gore type steals in this draft that the 49ers can target?

Chris_Horwedel: Hahaha Frank Gore type steals.... so you mean guys with 9+ YPC averages and major injuries?  That's tough to find.  As I said earlier, I think Anthony Waters will be a major steal.  Gary Russell (ex-Minn) is really a talent, but ran terribly because he's out of shape.  Staying at RB, Ramonce Taylor was a first round talent while at Texas.  I think Vincent Marshall (WR Houston) a lot and I think Chris Hopkins (TE Toledo) will be a nice pro.

Other teams hoping to find the second coming of Gore?  Wink  You're probably right since a broken leg usually isn't as serious as knee/shoulder problems even is he isn't healing as fast as expected.

If he was there in the 3rd or 4th he'd be a guy we would almost have to consider.  Posted a mock earlier that had us taking him I beleive it was in the 4th or 5th round.

Trent Dilfer is a good QB, and, even at 35 he's good enough to be our primary backup so any QB drafted will replace Hill.  I think if a QB is at the top of the board when it's the 49ers chance to draft they will trade down.

Scot will take a mid to late round lineman with medium measurables who is a bad SOB, just mean and nasty.

In regards to the question in the chat about finding another Gore like steal I just have one thing to say.
HaHaHaHaHa.
I really couldn't agree more with Chris Horwedel on that subject, as well as a few other subjects like Higgins.  There are not many players that were listed ahead of 2 NFL Pro Bowlers in college on the depth chart that dropped to the 3rd round because of injuries and can put up almost 3,00 all purpose yards in 30 game, inlcuding one season where they are not the starter, while averaging 5.2 YPC.  Those players are just a little rare.
But, if you want a RB in the later rounds that will be pretty good in the pros, not Frank Gore good, then look at Tony Hunt or Ramonce Taylor.  There is no way that we draft the latter because of character issues but Hunt fits the Nolan mold of a decent player with smarts and character.

Questions: What do you think the chances are of the 49ers drafting Jarvis Moss in the 1st? I think that he is the perfect 3-4 hybrid player.

Chris_Horwedel: Moss frustrates me.  One scout I spoke to recently told me that he didn't care for Moss at all, saying that "He's just physically weak".  There's obvious pass rush ability and he does probably fit better as a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE.  But I don't see Moss as a option at #11.  And really, if you want a 3-4 hybrid guy, look no further than the TFL machine that is Anthony Spencer.  Granted 11's to high for Spencer as well.

Why haven't we talked more about this Spencer kid?

Career: Ranks 13th on Purdue career sacks list with 10.5 ... has 23 lifetime starts at defensive end, tied for most by current Purdue defensive player with linebacker George Hall.

http://purduesports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/spencer_anthony00.html

Maybe we move down then keep him in mind IF we do move back UP into the first?  I really feel we are going to be active & why not move down target a guy like P. Willis, Carriker, Ginn, Meach., Bowe...........  any other # of players then USE that extra pick to move back up and into the first?  Could we end up with an additional 2 if we moved down from 11 to the middle high teens?   There is going to be a ton of value in that area.  We could then use that 2 to start making noise!!!!! Smiley

Jacoby Jones might not be a household name from a major Division I football program, but the wide receiver from Lane College, a tiny Division II school in Jackson, Tenn., could be one of a handful of small-college players picked in the NFL draft next month.

"I've heard a lot of people compare me to Marques Colston," Jones said. "It makes me feel good because he didn't come from a big school, but he proved that he could play in the NFL. I think he helps players like me and others from small schools. And that's what I'm trying to do. I want to make it. This way I can help somebody else."

"Few outside of CDS circles (and a few pro scouts) understand just how good Morgan State left tackle Cliff Louis can be.  A few more people found out yesterday at the Morgan State pro day, when "Smooth" showed up a ripped 6'7.5", 297 pounds, and ran two 40s in extremely cold weather in times of 5.15 anf 5.17.  He also did 22 reps (he has very long arms), a 30" vertical jump, a 9'1" broad jump, a 7.63 three-cone drill and a 4.61 short shuttle.  What sets Cliff apart are several things:  First and foremost are his outstanding feet.  He can really move in every way you expect an elite LOT candidate to move (and he is anything but "elite" still on many draft boards, because he is still well below the radar.)  He has tremendous growth potential, and will get better and better if taken by a team with a good line coach.  He is the kind of guy who has a tremendous upside, solid character, and a great work ethic.  The kid is also a spunge for coaching, and is a "yes sir" type who will do whatever it takes to succeed, starting with listening very carefully....
