The 49ers linebackers may have played their best game since Jamie Winborn left the field with injury. Julian Peterson was dynamite, and Derek Smith along with Jeff Ulbrich did a good job of being where they needed to be. Blitz packages still need some work, and if Jamie Winborn returns this week, it could be very beneficial.
The 49ers need depth at linebacker. Not only are they very thin at the position with Winborn and Rasheed injured, and Frank Strong on the injured reserve, but Jeff Ulbrich is playing on a knee that needs surgery.
Winborn’s speed and play making ability is something that has been missing from the lineup since his injury. He was due to return sometime in the past two weeks, but has come along slower than normal. This week Winborn has his best chance to return yet, whether it will be in a starting capacity is yet to be determined, but at the very least he will add some much needed depth to the position.
