When the 49ers resigned tackle Matt Willig this off-season, it became quite clear that they were expecting big things from the veteran. Willig a depth player for the 49ersí offensive line, has proven to be precious in stepping in to the line for an injured player, or in a rotation to provide a breather. With so much young talent on the offensive line depth charts, the 49ers will have to depend heavily on Willig should something take a turn for the worse.
The 49ers certainly have high expectations for players like Eric Heitman and Milfrod Stephenson. Their positions on the line are still adaptable depending on necessity. But when push comes to shove, if the 49ers need a back up offensive lineman this season, particularly at tackle expect them to call on Matt Willig.
The eleven year veteran is a proven player who knows the 49ers system and line calls and who works extremely well with the rest of the 49ers offensive line. The 49ers awarded him with a nice contract this off-season, making it quite clear they wanted him to stick around - especially after a great 2001 season.
The 49ers will be looking for some leadership from the veteran player this season. He will have to help some of the youngsters along the way. But when push comes to shove, he is there contingency plan - make no mistake about it.
