That status of two 49ers took a turn for the worse on Thursday. The 49ers tight end Eric Johnson underwent an MRI. The medical scan revealed that his back problems were due to a bulging disc in his lower back, which was also triggering the spasms. While the team remains hopeful that Johnson will play this Sunday, it’s more likely that the team will start Justin Swift and either use Brian Jennings, the long snapper as the teams’ back up tight end, or try and bring Mark Anelli up from the practice squad.

The team also saw linebacker Frank Strong undergo surgery. Strong is now expected to be out 6-8 weeks with a shoulder injury, and there is the possibility that Strong will be placed on the injured reserve. Shifting Strong to the injured reserve, could provide the 49ers with the roster room to add Mark Anelli to the squad.

It seems like with each passing day the news on the 49ers injuries keeps getting worse. This team needs to find a way to get and stay healthy or this season will get more painful each week.
