On Friday the 49ers decided to place linebacker Frank Strong on their injured reserve. Strong underwent surgery on his shoulder earlier in the week, and it was believed that he would need at least six weeks to recover, before even returning to practice. The 49ers, who are banged up as it is, needed his roster spot and so they ended his Cinderella rookie year.
Strong was a long shot to make the team this off-season. A former safety, Strong was asked to move to linebacker when he joined the 49ers in the off-season, because of the seemingly endless depth the 49ers had at the position (got to love the irony of the current situation eh?). Strong agreed to make the move, and never looked back.
Showing flashes of being a solid player all through camp and the pre-season, Strong, a San Francisco native was a fan favorite this summer. His success with the team on the field however, and the 49ers willingness to go a little heavy at the linebacker position allowed the speedy linebacker to make the team.
As the sixth linebacker on the depth chart, Strong’s role began simply on special teams. But as injuries began to mount the 49ers continued to increase Strong’s role. Last weekend against the Saints, Strong suffered what would be his season ending injury - ending what has been a great start to the season.
As Strong’s name was added to the injured reserve, fans of the young player, particularly those in Stockton, where Strong received constant uplifting thoughts from messages posted on the score board throughout training camp, had to be feeling his pain. We look forward to seeing Strong next off-season back at practice.
