First round draft pick, cornerback Mike Rumph joined the 49ers for Tuesday’s afternoon practice, after finalizing a five year contract with the 49ers in the morning. The 49ers figure Rumph to be a key part of its defense this year, and Rumph missing training camp time was bad news - especially considering the first day was spent almost entirely on nickel and dime coverage units, of which Rumph is expected to play a big role.

Rumph’s five year deal includes a $2.35 million signing bonus the total contract is worth $6.4 million. The deal, gives Rumph a secure amount of time to really become a part of the team, it could also jump to $8.9 million if Rumph can reach certain bonuses.

To prevent falling behind of the rest of the team, Rumph has called fellow rookie defensive back Kevin Curtis several times since the opening of camp, inquiring about what the team was doing. Rumph expects to pick up from behind quite quickly.

Rumph however may see greater competition for the third cornerback spot than originally envisioned though. Cornerbacks Jimmy Williams and Anthony Parker have really stepped up their performance this training camp.
