Owens/Mariucci Still No Word

March 11th 2002

In what has been a rather successful off-season for the 49ers so far, it's rather puzzling that Steve Mariucci and Terrell Owens have not had their little get together yet. The two sides were scheduled to meet shortly after the Tampa Bay fiasco, but when all was said and done, Mariucci was not at the meeting. It's really quite surprising that the 49ers did not make this a bigger priority this off-season.

The April Draft is now just over forty days away, and it wont be long before rumors start to fly about the 49ers putting Owens on the trading block. Could that be it? Why Mariucci hasn't had his meeting with Owens yet. As much as this is really nothing more than speculation - or the beginning of rumor I'd rather not spread, it's a question that I just can't get out of my mind.

Terry Donahue has been quoted saying he's happy with the receivers on the team - and in reference to JJ Stokes has declared him part of the future, but has not said similar things about Owens. Is it that Donahue doesn't believe a player who puts up the numbers Owens does would ever come under the scrutiny that Stokes may, or is it the foundation of a lack of faith in Terrell Owens maturation process.

There is no one on the team who would doubt Owens ability, his number and contributions are extensive. However he has yet to mature into a tolerant player, and it's hurt him on the field. Because he does not get along with coach Mariucci, Owens at times likely question his lack or use in a game, and that may contribute to some of the dropped balls and missed opportunities that uncharacteristically fell his way this past season.

Now this article isn't intended to start rumors, but I really felt it necessary to address this, and try and understand why there has been no meeting between the two yet - especially with the draft and mini-camps rapidly approaching. Unfortunately this was the best answer I could come up with - so what is Owens worth to you?
