Before the season 49ers receiver Terrell Owens declared that his personal goal was to reach 2000 yards this season. No receiver in history, not even Jerry Rice has ever hit this mark. Clearly Owens has lofty expectations of himself.

A 2000 yard season breaks down to 125 yards a game, which really isn’t that unattainable. But after the first game of the season, it became quite clear, that Owens would need even bigger performances as the season wore on.

Owens was responsible for a pitiful 41 yards, leaving 1959 left to reach his goal. Over the course of the final 15 weeks of the season, Owens will have to record an average of 130.6 yards a game.

While the 2000 yard mark isn’t completely out of reach, it does seem rather unlikely that he will hit it. Teams can take Owens out of a game, and force the 49ers to use other weapons - until the 49ers can prove that they can dominate without Owens, he won’t be setting many new receiving records.

Talk about it in the 49ers Paradise Forum
