49ers Sign McNown
June 14 2002
By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise
In a very unexpected move last evening, the 49ers traded for, and signed quarterback Cade McNown. The 49ers offered a conditional seventh round draft pick for the 49ers, and are elated to have yet another quarterback on the roster. The condition on the contract is that McNown must be on the 53-man roster for at least five games this season. The former UCLA star has struggled throughout his career in the NFL, but hopes to make a difference with the 49ers.

McNown was a man the 49ers expressed a lot of interest in the 1999 draft. Coming out of college, McNown was compared to Steve Young - both being left handed and mobile quarterbacks. At the time, it seemed that Bill Walsh was quite interested in McNown. Terry Donahue also knows McNown well because of the time he spent at UCLA.

“I’m looking forward to my opportunity with the 49ers,” said McNown. “I learned a lot in my year in Miami, and I think I will be a better player because of that. I know I can be a quality player in the league, and I hope I get a chance to show that in San Francisco.”

McNown has plenty of competition ahead of him. But his signing does shake things up a little bit on the depth charts. Clearly the 49ers want to investigate the potential that McNown has, and given the trade for only a conditional pick, it was a virtual no brainer for them.
