More Attention Needed At LB
April 19 2002
By Bryan Hersh of 49ers Paradise
Today being Friday, the count down to the draft has gone from days to hours. War Rooms have been set up. Final evaluations and analyses have been made. Coaches and team executives are flying around the country. And as we wait, we speculate. For the 49ers; a corner - defensive lineman - offensive lineman - receiver, what will it be? Although Terry Donahue and company have made all the positions in the draft an apparent priority, setting up a smoke screen that fireman couldn't get through; they have spent very little time talking about the linebacking position.

The 49ers need help at linebacker. Julian Peterson and Jamie Winborn look like they can both be very good. Derek Smith and Jeff Ulbrich, though versatile, seem like they would be much better in situational roles. The 49ers need a strong third linebacker. Would they take one early in the draft?

It's been my experience that often the least talked about positions see tons of action on draft day. Kickers aside, the 49ers have stated only that they can use a linebacker and have not really pushed the idea. Perhaps that's because they are hoping a great one will fall within reach.

The 49ers are bound to have change over at the position this year, with Winborn likely becoming a starter, and possibly another player - a dratee stepping it up. At the very least, with the departure of special teams stand out, and versatile linebacker Terry Killens, the 49ers should be seriously considering drafting a player for this position.

Talk about it in the 49ers Paradise Forum
