John Keith has finally been activated from the practice squad after spending about a year and a half on the injured reserve, and practice squad rehabilitating his injury and getting ready to play football again. Keith was once the starting safety for the 49ers, after having a very impressive rookie season, and second off-season with the 49ers. His injury let Zack Bronson into the lineup, and Bronson has never looked back.

With Tony Parrish nursing a tail bone injury the 49ers felt it important to activate Keith, given that they didn’t have any experienced safety on their depth charts (Ronnie Heard is already starting), and so while Parrish is expected to play, the 49ers felt it important to activate Keith.

A punishing hitter, and great special teams player, Kieth has been itching to get back on the field. “You've just got to stay positive," said Keith, "It's been pretty difficult knowing I want to be out there, but I always looked at it as an opportunity and tried to keep my chin up." Keith also underwent knee surgery in college.

Activating Keith, if he is indeed healthy enough to play is a great move. After getting Paul Smith back last week, the addition of Keith should also really help in improving the special team’s coverage unit. In Keith the 49ers gain a starting caliber player in a depth position, and if he proves healthy, the team will likely keep him on the active roster for the remainder of the season.
