The 49ers began the second day of the draft with another Senior Bowl player, defensive end, Jay Moore. Moore brings more versatility to the 49ers defense, which is important as the team transitions to a 3-4 defense. He will likely play outside linebacker for the team, but will compete with a whole set of new players the 49ers have added to the front seven this offseason.
Moore is a consistent player, he plays well against the run, and has good agility and change of direction ability. He has good speed and range which will fit well with the linebacker unit on the 49ers that has focused on improving speed lately. He has the frame to continue to add strength and is a character guy who can follow through on that ability. Known for putting in the extra work, he spends lots of time in the film room and is a high energy guy. He has a good football sense and rarely gets caught by misdirection plays. Moore does need to work on his leverage when matched up against blockers, he is faster then he is quick which can be a bit of issue in closing in on tackles. Has more skill as a speed rusher then a technical rusher.
The 49ers have made a concrete effort to improve their front seven this offseason. Moore is one more piece to that puzzle. Lacking a pass rush as was the case the past several years is something the 49ers are simply no longer willing to accept. Versatility across the front seven is a common theme for most of these players which allow the 49ers to play the 3-4 and move to a 4-3 whenever needed. Moore is expected to drop 10 pounds in order to better fit the outside linebacker position.
