Over the past few seasons June 1st was a very exciting time for the 49ers and 49ers fans. All eyes were on the waiver wire to see if any quality players were released. A slow evolution under the Nolan regime has reduced the importance of the day though. So, while attention is still paid to June 1st cuts, it is really a much more quiet time in 49ers land, particularly this season.

The 49ers were very active early in the free agency period and in the draft utilizing significant salary cap space to fill out the roster with high quality players. With the draft and mini-camps having past, the team is now focused on physical conditioning rather than preliminary installation of the offense and defense. The lull in action is only temporary though, as the team will begin training camp towards the end of July.

The calm before the storm of two-a-day practices gives everyone a chance to absorb how far the 49ers have come under the Nolan regime. The team is clearly on the rise: Nolan improved his record in year two, the team is finally making some headway on a new stadium, the team is in the clear of salary cap hell, the team is loading the roster with talented free agents and rookies, and the team has even gotten a jump start on signing its rookies for the third consecutive year.

It is quite clear that the 49ers are no longer the laughing stock of the NFL. They may not be Super Bowl contenders as of yet that of course is still the goal, but they are functioning as a cohesive unit from the top down. The results are success on the field, quality control throughout the organization, and the appearance that for the first time in a long time the team is being run in the right way.
