The selection of Dashon Goldson fills a need in the 49es defensive backfield. Goldson is a versatile player that has improved his coverage ability after playing CB in 2006. He moves well for a big man, but is not a fast player per se. Goldson lacks the top end speed to be a great fit at CB, and will likely compete at free safety with Mark Roman. He is a pure athlete with good reaction skills. His sure tackling ability would be an asset at the free safety position. A shift back to free safety may improve his ability to make big plays.
Goldson will not likely start in the defensive backfield. The team has improved its safety position since last season and seems to be fairly satisfied with Lewis, Lewis, and Roman. But Goldson will see action, and can win the spot if he can prove to be more reliable in pass coverage then Roman. The 49ers have made a point of adding sure tacklers to their team, and Goldson fits that mold even if he is not a punishing tackler.
The 49ers have made the defensive side of the ball a real priority on day two. Goldson gives the 49ers some additional support in the defensive backfield an area that has been very hard hit by injuries in the past few seasons.
